Long Stratton is a large village which has grown considerably over the last few years, with the prospect of even more development to come, and hopefully a bypass. The village lies 10 miles south of Norwich. The name Stratton comes from the Roman word 'Stratum' meaning 'paved street'. The street 'Stratum' was a small part of the main Roman road from Colchester to Caister St Edmunds near Norwich, and Roman relics have been found with evidence of a Roman village having been near by. The village is well catered for regarding facilities, there being three schools, Infant, Middle and High, two Church of England churches, St Mary's and St Michaels and two others, a Congregational and a Methodist. There is an active Church of the Latter Day Saints. A new medical centre was opened in 2004 and this serves the village and surrounding area, as indeed does the Leisure Centre. The offices of South Norfolk District Council are situated in Swan Lane, together with other associated Council buildings, and this year the Saffron Housing Trust was established and also has premises there. There is a large, well equipped and maintained playing field on Manor Road. There are various specific areas at the playing field, skateboard/BMX/children's area and activity area also tennis and all weather courts, and the bowls club has use of land in the south east corner. Within Long Stratton there are areas of common land - Rhees Green, Wood Green and Crow Green and there is other common land close by at Morningthorpe and Fritton. With play areas on the Churchfields development, it can therefore be seen that there are a number of areas where there can be play and where the countryside can be enjoyed. There are well over 100 businesses including banks, building societies and offices, several shops covering most requirements, and a Solar Co-operative Society store was opened in 2004. With two public houses, various takeaways, coffee shop and café there is a wide choice for food and drink.
